Fuentes Scores Twice Leading Berks to Playoff Win
Ariel Fuentes (Sophomore/Easton) scored two first half goals to lead fourth seeded Penn State Berks to a playoff victory over fifth seeded SUNY Cobleskill.
Penn State Berks improves to 14-5 (8-2 NEAC) on the year and advance to the NEAC Semi-Final where they will take on top seeded Penn State Harrisburg. The Tigers end their season with an 8-10 (6-5 NEAC) record.
Fuentes gave Berks an early lead when she collected an Alex Volovar (Sophomore/Lower Dauphin) direct kick that hit the crossbar and netted her first goal of the day. Fuentes scored three minutes later when Briana Woods (Sophomore/Lansdale Catholic) fed her down the left side and she beat the keeper to give Berks a 2-0 advantage. Berks would add a goal from Brooke Kern (Sophomore/Kutztown) off a Mackenzy Dawson (Freshman/Governor Mifflin) cross and one touch from Woods to take Berks into halftime up 3-0.
The second half saw the Fighting Tigers turn up the offensive pressure and cutting the lead to two goals when Kristen Raina scored off a pass from Mady Swartz for their lone goal of the day. Cobleskill took all eight of their shots in the second half but Cassidy Dawson (Sophomore/Governor Mifflin) was able to keep them to just one goal as she recorded all six saves in the second half.
Penn State Berks will return to action when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg and take on top seeded Penn State Harrisburg in the NEAC Semi-Finals at 11:30am on Saturday.
