Strong Second Half Leads Berks Past Rowan

The Nittany Lions (2-4) shot 59.4% in the second half and scored 54 points to defeat Rowan University (5-3) on Tuesday evening at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed by as many as nine points late in the opening half but used a strong second half to notch their second victory of the season.

The Profs came out of the gates scoring the first six points of the game and building a 12-6 advantage with 13:15 remaining in the half.  The Nittany Lions then used a 7-1 run that was capped off by a Jamie Norris (Sophomore/St. Pius X) three point play to tie the game at 13-13 with 11:17 left in the half.  Rowan took back control in the half and built a nine point lead with just over two minutes to go in the half before a Berks 8-2 run closed the half and sent Berks into the locker rooms down 35-32.

The two teams came out of the locker room and traded buckets over the opening three minutes before a Shirah Graybill (Freshman/Cocalico) layup at the 15:44 mark gave Berks their first lead of the game that they would not relinquish.  The Nittany Lions put on a full court press and held the Profs scoreless for five minutes and took control of the contest.  Penn State Berks built as much as a sixteen point advantage en route to their second win of the season.

The Nittany Lions placed three in double figures with Steph Binder (Junior/Wilson) leading the way with 22 points on 7-14 shooting.  Courtney Bailey (Senior/Dauphin Co. Vo-Tech) finished with her fourth double double of the season scoring 20 points and collecting 11 rebounds while Jasmine Harris-Kane (Junior/Simon Gratz) contributed 18 points on the night.  Shirah Graybill turned in a solid all around performance with 6 points, three rebounds and a game high 5 steals.

Amanda Jennings led the way for the Profs with 21 points and 8 rebounds on the night.  Gina Catanzariti and Lauren Creel rounded out the scoring with 15 and 10 points respectively.

The women will close out the first semester schedule when they travel to the College of St. Elizabeth on Friday for a 7pm tipoff.
