Women Hold on for Victory over Keystone
Penn State Berks (10-8) connected on 4-6 from the foul line in the last minute of play to hold on for a 65-60 victory over Keystone College (4-14) on Tuesday evening in the Beaver Community Center.
The game got off to a slow start as the teams fought to an 8-8 tie with 14:07 remaining and Berks held a slim 16-15 lead four minutes later before taking control of the half. The Nittany Lions held the visiting Giants scoreless over the next seven minutes of play and built a 27-15 advantage with 3:35 left in the half. The 11-0 run saw five different Berks players score and was capped off by a Courtney Bailey (Senior/Dauphin Co. Vo-Tech) layup with 3:35 on the clock. The Giants quickly answered the Berks run putting together an 11-1 run of their own to end the first half and go into the locker rooms with new life down by a bucket 28-26.
The second half saw the teams battle to six lead changes and six ties in the final 20 minutes of play. Keystone seemed to take control early in the second half behind the strong play of Ellen Fallon as they built their largest lead of the game at the 11:33 mark in the second half hold a slim 44-40 advantage. The next six minutes saw neither team hold more than a four point lead and the lead change hands three more times before Berks took the lead for good at the 5:53 mark.
Berks turned up the defense over the following five minutes of the game forcing the Giants into six turnovers while they converted at the foul line to seal the victory. Courtney Bailey led the way for Berks finishing with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Steph Binder (Junior/Wilson) contributed 14 points including shooting 8-10 from the foul line. Shakiyla Stone (Sophomore/Simon Gratz) contributed 13 points and 4 assists while Jasmine Harris-Kane (Junior/Simon Gratz) put up 10 points and handed out 4 assists in the win.
Ellen Fallon led all scorers with 28 points and had a game high 10 rebounds for the Giants.
The women will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Wilson College for a 7pm tip off.
