Shippen and Flowers Lead Berks past Morrisville State

Vonte Shippen (Sophomore/Norristown) and Kemian Flowers (Sophomore/Wyomissing) each had a double double leading Penn State Berks (2-8) to a 76-69 victory over Morrisville State (1-8) on Saturday afternoon in the Beaver Community Center. 

The Nittany Lions who never trailed in the game opened up the contest on a 12-1 run over the first five minutes of play.  Brian Organtini (Junior/Norristown) and Vonte Shippen fueled the run with Organtini hitting two from the field while Shippen opened up the game with a three point play.  The Mustangs trailed 23-12 at the 7:06 mark in the first half before using a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to tie the score at 25 apiece.  The teams would trade buckets over the remainder of the half and went into the locker rooms all tied up at 27. 

The Nittany Lions gave up a basket early in the second half before taking control of the game with a 18-2 surge over the first five minutes of the half to build a 45-29 lead they would never relinquish.  The Mustangs would cut the lead to 54-45 with just under eight minutes remaining but would get no closer the rest of the way.

Vonte Shippen led the way for Berks with a game high 20 points on 6-9 shooting and going 8-10 from the foul line.  Kemian Flowers turned in a solid performance with 18 points and a game high 14 rebounds.  Brian Organtini and Adam Fusco (Senior/Norristown) would round out the scoring for Berks with 14 and 10 respectively. 

The Mustangs were led by Larry Bowers who finished the day with 16 points on 6-14 shooting while Ron Tarver contributed 15 points and 4 rebounds in the loss.

Penn State Berks will return to action tomorrow when they host Cazenovia College with tip off schedule for 3pm in the Beaver Community Center.
