Early Offense and Fleischuts Complete Game Lead Berks to Win
Penn State Berks scored early and used a complete game by Tyler Fleischut (Junior/C.B. West) to defeat non-conference opponent Misercordia University 8-6 at the Hintz Athletic Field on Wednesday.
Misercordia got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Nate Newman hit a ground rule double with two outs in the inning. Brandon Calafut followed up with an RBI double to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after the top half of the first. Berks went down in order in the bottom of the inning and the Cougars added another run in the second off a Mike Murphy RBI single.
Berks went into the bottom of the second inning down 2-0 and exploded for five runs in the inning. Aaron Klaptosky (Junior/Pottsgrove) led off the inning with a walk and was followed by a Dan Faith (Sophomore/Buena Regional) single. The Nittany Lions moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Anthony Furillo (Sophomore/Holy Name) got the first run across with a sacrifice fly to center. Matt Emrick (Freshman/Freedom), Fleischut and Dan Skawski (Sophomore/Emmaus) each singled in runs to close out the inning with a 5-2 lead.
Penn State Berks would put up three more runs in their half of the third inning. Dan Faith opened up the inning with his second hit of the day. Pat Griffin (Senior/Council Rock North) came up with runners on second and third and got a bunt down the first base line to sacrifice in Faith. Matt Emerick and Tyler Fleischut doubled and singled back to back knocking in the last runs of the inning.
Misercordia would answer in the fifth inning putting up two runs in the inning. Anthony Goncalves and Nick Kauffman each recording RBI's in the inning. The Cougars would close out the days scoring in the sixth inning with two more runs each unearned to close the Berks lead to 8-6 going into the late innings.
Berks would leave the bases loaded in the bottom half of the seventh inning and needed to rely on their defense to hold onto a small lead. The Berks defense was able to turn away the Cougars in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.
Dan Skawski finished the day going 2-5 with two RBI's, Matt Emrick went 3-3 with two RBI's and scoring two runs. Tyler Fleischut helped out his own cause going 3-4 with two RBI's and scoring one run. In addition to his work at the plate Fleischut pitched a complete game allowing six runs, five earned, on twelve hits with two strikeouts.
The men will return to action on Saturday when they host Swarthmore College in a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
