Keystone Routs Nittany Lions in NEAC Championship
May 3, 2008 (Rome, NY) - Second seeded Keystone College (32-12) compiled 20 hits en route to the 2008 NEAC Championship with a convincing 16-3 victory over #3 Penn State Berks (17-27) Saturday afternoon at Larry Delutis Field.
The Giants did not wait long to begin their impressive offensive performance with two of their 20 hits coming in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone for the following eight innings of play. With one out, Keystone second baseman Cody Collins (Millsboro, DE, Delmar) ripped his first of four hits down the left field line and reached second base safely. Nelson Gomez (Rio Grande, PR) followed with a single through the left side scoring Collins and giving the Giants a 1-0 lead after one inning.
The Nittany Lions managed to score a run in each of the following three innings, including their final run of the game coming in the top of the fourth inning on an infield error which scored Kyle Svenkeson (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) who reached base on a single through the left side. That unearned run put the Nittany Lions down only one at the time. Every time the Nittany Lions put a run on the scoreboard, the Giants seemed to come up with an answer to keep the Nittany Lions at bay.
The knock out blows that gave the Giants control of the game came in the fifth and sixth innings where they scored a total of nine runs on nine hits and one costly Nittany Lion error. This gave the Giants a comfortable 13-3 lead with only three innings remaining in the championship bout.
In those final three innings, the Nittany Lions only managed to get one man on board but stranded him on first base in the top of the seventh inning. Despite the Nittany Lions bats going cold, the Giants did not, tacking on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to rack up their total to 16 runs, and that is where the scoring ended. After a one, two, three inning in the top of the ninth for the Nittany Lions, the Giants were crowned the North Eastern Athletic Conference Champions for the third time in the past four years.
