Berks Splits with SUNY IT

Kevin Heilman (Freshman/Easton) pitched a complete game surrendering just one run to lead Penn State Berks (12-16-1) to a weekend split with SUNY IT.

Berks took the opening game of the Saturday doubleheader defeating SUNY IT 7-1.  The men opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Michael Ference (Freshman/Brandywine Heights) scoring Aaron Klaptosky (Junior/Pottsgrove)

Kevin Heilman doubled to open up the third inning and scored on an RBI single by Aaron Klaptosky to put Berks up 2-0.  The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Berks exploded for four runs in the inning.  Klaptosky again played a part in the two out rally with a single that knocked in two runs. 

Klaptosky led the offensive charge in game one going 3-3 with 3 RBI's and scoring 2 runs.  Kevin Heilman helped out his cause going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Michael Ference rounded out the offensive attack going 2-2 in the game with an RBI. 

Heilman finished the game throwing all 7.0 innings allowing 7 hits and allowing just 1 run.

Game two saw Berks fall behind early as SUNY IT scored two runs in the top half of the first and added two in the top of the fifth.  Berks trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning and scored seven runs to take a 7-4 lead. 

Seth Shultz (Freshman/Conrad Weiser) knocked in two runs with a bases loaded single.  Aaron Klaptosky knocked in two runs as well with a single into left field.  Brent Hartman (Freshman/Fleetwood) closed out the inning with an RBI single through the right side giving Berks a 7-4 lead. 

SUNY IT answered right back scoring four runs in the top half of the sixth inning to give them an 8-7 advantage.  The Wildcats tacked on three more runs in the seventh and Berks would not score again. 

Matt Emrick (Freshman/Freedom) took the loss throwing 5.2 innings giving up 8 runs only two earned on 9 hits and striking out 4.

The men will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia Biblical University for a non conference match up starting at 12pm.
