Penn State Berks Struggles from the Plate and Fall to Mt. Aloysius
Penn State Berks (8-14-1) managed just five hits in the opening game and seven in game two as they were swept by Mt. Aloysius College on Tuesday at the Hintz Athletic Field.
The Nittany Lions fell behind early in the opening game giving up two first inning runs and a run in the third to trail the Mounties 3-0. Berks would answer in the bottom of the third when Kevin Heilman (Freshman/Easton) singled in Ken Bedi (Sophomore/Nazareth) to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth Dan Skawski (Sophomore/Emmaus) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on an Aaron Klaptosky (Junior/Pottsgrove) double to put the tying runs in scoring position. Skawski would score on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Faith (Sophomore/Buena Regional) while Klaptosky scored on a passed ball to tie the score at three apiece.
The Mounties were able to put up a run in the top of the sixth inning and Berks would strand the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh to fall 4-3. Michael Ference (Freshman/Brandywine Heights) took the loss in the first game going 6.1 allowing 4 runs on 11 hits.
Kevin Heilman and Aaron Klaptosky led the offensive for Berks in the opening game. Heilman finished the game going 2-3 with a double and an RBI while Klaptosky also went 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
Game two again saw Berks trail early giving up five runs in the first three innings of play. The men trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the second and Anthony Furillo (Sophomore/Holy Name) knocked in the first Berks run of the game. The Mounties answered with three runs in the top of the third to go ahead 5-1 after three innings of play.
Berks would put up two more runs in the late innings but were unable to overcome the 5-1 deficit. Jason Mays (Freshman/Wilson) took the loss in game two allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work. John Pastal (Freshman/Lebanon Catholic) and Brian Wrobel (Freshman/Antietam) each threw an inning allowing one run on two hits.
Aaron Klaptosky finished the second game going 2-2 with a triple and a run scored. Kevin Heilman finished with another solid performance going 2-4 with a run scored while Brent Hartman (Freshman/Fleetwood) went 2-2 with an RBI off the bench.
The men will return to action on Saturday when they host Lancaster Bible College for a doubleheader beginning at 1pm at the Hintz Athletic Field.
